# Raising an Alert: Swipe to Alert and Press-and-Hold Activation

This guide explains the two ways the alert button on the home screen of the Vismo Locate & Protect app can raise a panic alert, and how administrators and app users choose between them.

Until version 6.0.0, the only way to use the alert button was to press and hold it. Some users reported raising alerts by accident, for example while the phone was in a pocket or bag. Version 6.0.0 adds a second activation method, Swipe, which needs a deliberate slide before an alert is raised. The method can be set by your organisation for every app in a group, or chosen by each user in the app.

| **Method** | **How it works** |
| --- | --- |
| **Press and hold (default)** | Press and hold the alert button. A countdown runs, and the alert is raised when it reaches zero. This works exactly as it did before version 6.0.0. |
| **Swipe** | Tap the alert button to open a slider, then slide it all the way across to raise the alert. Letting go early, tapping Cancel or waiting 10 seconds raises nothing. |

###### Before you start

- Devices must have version 6.0.0 (build 708) or later of the app, on Android or iOS. Devices on an earlier version ignore the portal setting and keep using Press and hold, so check your users have updated before relying on Swipe. We recommend version 6.0.1 or later, which includes a fix for accidental alerts (see below).
- Nothing changes until someone opts in. New installs and existing users stay on Press and hold, and the portal setting defaults to Not Set.
- Setting the method for a group is done in the portal's device configuration.
- The change takes effect straight away on the home screen's alert button.
- With Press and hold selected, the page also shows the hold time (1 to 5 seconds) and countdown sound settings. These are hidden when Swipe is selected, because Swipe doesn't use a countdown.
- Reset to Defaults puts the method back to Press and hold.
- If your organisation has set the method, Activation method shows the method in use, greyed out, with a blue info icon. Tapping the icon shows: “Your organisation has chosen how the alert button is activated, so it can't be changed here.” Your own choice is remembered and restored if your organisation goes back to Not Set.
- With Press and hold: while an alert is active, press and hold the same button to cancel it.
- With Swipe: while an alert is active, the alert button becomes a cancel button. Tap it to open an orange Slide to cancel alert slider, then slide it all the way across. Tapping Cancel, or waiting 10 seconds, closes the slider and the alert stays active.
- Press and hold is the default for new installs and existing users.
- While your organisation sets the method, each user's saved preference is kept but not used. If the setting goes back to Not Set, each user returns to whatever they had chosen.
- The setting only changes the home screen alert button. Flic Bluetooth buttons and other ways of raising an alert work as before.
- Both methods work on Android and iOS, in light and dark mode. Text is available in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

###### Setting the activation method for a group (administrators)

| **Step** | **What to do** |
| --- | --- |
| **1** | In the portal, open Edit device configuration for the group you want to change. |
| **2** | Make sure Device is set to Vismo Locate & Protect App. |
| **3** | Under Alerts, find Alert button activation and choose a value (see the table below). |
| **4** | The row is marked Changed. Select Save to apply it. |

| **Value** | **What happens in the app** |
| --- | --- |
| **Not Set** | The default. Each user chooses Press and hold or Swipe in the app's Alert Settings, and Press and hold is used until they change it. |
| **Press and hold** | Every app in the group uses Press and hold. The user's picker is greyed out and can't be changed. |
| **Swipe** | Every app in the group uses Swipe. The user's picker is greyed out and can't be changed. |

The app reads the setting when it starts and whenever it receives an updated device configuration, so no reinstall or sign-out is needed.

###### Choosing an activation method in the app (users)

| **Step** | **What to do** |
| --- | --- |
| **1** | In the app, open Settings › Alert. |
| **2** | Under Activation method, choose Press and hold or Swipe. |

###### Raising an alert with Press and hold

| **Step** | **What to do** |
| --- | --- |
| **1** | Press and hold the red alert button at the bottom of the home screen. |
| **2** | A countdown ring appears over the screen and counts down the hold time. |
| **3** | Keep holding until it reaches zero to raise the alert. Releasing early cancels it and nothing is sent. |

From version 6.0.1, the countdown also stops as soon as the app leaves the screen, for example if you swipe to another app or open Control Centre, so an alert can't be raised by mistake.

###### Raising an alert with Swipe

| **Step** | **What to do** |
| --- | --- |
| **1** | Tap the alert button. The screen dims and a red Slide to trigger alert slider appears. Tapping the button doesn't raise an alert on its own. |
| **2** | Drag the white thumb all the way to the right-hand end of the slider. The alert is raised only when the thumb reaches the end. |
| **3** | If you let go before the end, the thumb springs back and nothing is sent. |

![](https://support.vismo.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-26-2026-03-34-29-8907-PM.png?width=300&height=190&name=image-png-Oct-26-2026-03-34-29-8907-PM.png)

The slider closes without raising an alert if you tap Cancel or do nothing for 10 seconds. Tapping the dimmed background doesn't close it, so a stray touch can't dismiss it by accident. The phone vibrates when the slider opens and again when the slide completes.

###### Cancelling an active alert

You can only cancel an active alert if your organisation's Allow disarming panic alarm setting allows it. This applies whichever activation method is in use.

###### Good to know Troubleshooting / FAQs

| **Question** | **Answer** |
| --- | --- |
| **We set Swipe in the portal, but a user still has Press and hold.** | Their device is on a version earlier than 6.0.0 (build 708), which ignores the setting. Ask them to update the app from the App Store or Google Play. |
| **A user can't change the activation method in the app.** | Your organisation has set the method in the portal, so the picker is greyed out. Set Alert button activation back to Not Set to let users choose. |
| **The slider closed without raising an alert.** | The slider closes after 10 seconds without action, or when Cancel is tapped. Tap the button again and slide the thumb all the way to the end. |
| **A user can't cancel an active alert.** | Cancelling follows the Allow disarming panic alarm setting in the group's device configuration. |
| **Does this change how Flic buttons work?** | No. Only the home screen alert button is affected. |
